The river season may be over until June, but there are still plenty of places to go fishing and Oxfordshire is particularly well blessed for stillwaters.

Big-fish anglers from all over the country travel to our county to fish the likes of Linear Fisheries at Stanton Harcourt, Orchid Lake at Dorchester and Linch Hill at Standlake.

Kevin Ware, from Croydon, visited one of them, Unity Lake at Linear, which is part of the Guys Syndicate, and set a new lake record by landing the mirror carp known as ‘Moonscale’ at a massive 42.2.0.

He used a Mainline Cell boilie to catch the fish, which he also landed last November at a slightly lower weight.

l I WAS reading in one of the weekly angling papers how respected angler John Wilson will not be going to the Angling and Fisheries Summit, which is to be chaired by Natural Environment and Fisheries Minister Richard Benyon MP.

Wilson has described the summit as a ‘whitewash’.

The idea of the meeting is to bring closer together relationships between the sport and the government.

Wilson is concerned that otter and cormorant predation will not be addressed, and I have to agree with him.

Unless something is done sooner rather than later, we can say goodbye to our sport.

Someone was telling me that carp and chub had been found on the Oxford Canal with their throats ripped out.

On the Kennet at Burghfield, cormorants actually come through your swim and they are almost tame.

I have nothing against these mammals and birds, but we need to understand them more, take appropriate action to protect fish stocks and get rid of all the red tape.
