MARK Charlett and Oxford City & County completed a clean sweep of Oxfordshire indoor titles with victory in the pairs final at Chipping Norton.

Having won the singles, triples and fours, Charlett and his lead Sam Watts, who was seeking a third crown, defeated Carterton’s Bob Turley and Paul Justin 23-14.

Skip Justin, who was deputising for the indisposed Tim Jupp, and Morley could not stop the City& County juggernaut.

The game followed the pattern of this season’s previous finals with the eventual champions going into an early lead, and then easing up slightly, before doing the necessary to secure victory.

Carterton resorted to the use of the weighted bowl early on, killing the first end, but this tactic combined with long discussions at critical moments failed to unsettle the winners, who led 7-1 and 16-3.

A trouncing looked to be in the offing.

However, with club finals taking place on the adjacent rinks and possibly causing some distractions, the west Oxfordshire side amazingly whittled this lead down to 18-14 with two ends to play.

This came after Turley and Justin gained a well-deserved four shots on the 14th end, after Charlett missed with his last wood.

The large number of local club members attending that event were left pondering as to how Charlett and his fellow City & County bowlers can be stopped next season.
