OXFORD City's Gemma Bridge could not hide her delight at finishing fifth in the women's 20k race walk at the Commonwealth Games, writes STUART WEIR.

The 24-year-old finished in a time of 1hr 39mins 31secs at the Currumbin Beachfront as home favourite Jemima Montage took victory earlier this morning.

Bridge, who only started race walking 14 months ago, had a difficult build-up to the games and was thrilled with the result.

She said: “Considering the build-up, I am just happy to be here.

"I had been injured, and had food poisoning, and just had two weeks’ training before coming out here”.

Bridge lost touch with the leading group after 5km, but was not deterred, moving from eighth to fifth, including closing down a 90-second gap to Australia's Beki Smith.

She said: "It would have been nicer to have held on to them longer for my confidence, but I like chasing.

"It meant that I could relax and just do my own thing, not worry about my technique and enjoy the experience”.

Wallingford hockey coach Owain Dolan-Gray played twice for Wales over the weekend.

His side were beaten 3-0 by Malaysia in their second Pool B game on Saturday, before featuring in this morning's 4-3 defeat to India.

Wales, coached by Oxford Brookes University lecturer Danny Newcombe, next face England on Tuesday at 5.30am (BST).

Upper Heyford's Stefanie Collins scored 14 points when captaining England to a 78-51 victory over Mozambique earlier today.

She is in action again tomorrow (8.33am) against Australia.

Didcot weightlifter Ben Watson is also competing on Monday (9.42am) in the +105kg category.
