JACK Rooney was crowned singles champion at the Oxfordshire Open and Over 35 County Championships.
Rooney saw off Bobby Gosling 7-5, 6-4 in the men’s open final to take top honours at Abingdon’s White Horse Leisure & Tennis Centre.
The earlier rounds of the competition were played at local clubs, but spectators were treated to a host of close encounters as the event reached a conclusion.
Veteran Russell Boulton won the over 35 singles, proving too strong for Ole Anderson with a 6-1, 6-2 success.
The ladies’ over 35 singles went to Alice Protheroe, who saw off Evelyn Hargraves 6-2, 6-2.
Protheroe went on to complete a double, partnering Pam Eagles to glory in the over 35 ladies’ doubles

They defeated Hargraves and Suzi Willis 6-3, 6-3.
Hargraves then made it three runners-up places on the day, when losing out in the over 35s mixed doubles event in what proved the match of the tournament
Marc Gilkes and Caroline Thom edged a titanic battle 7-6 (3), 3-6, 6-4 to take the title from Hargraves and David Hillyard.
Hillyard, however, had already landed the over 35 men’s doubles in his first three-set clash of the day.
He teamed up with Chris Snelling to achieve a 6-4, 3-6, 6-0 success over Richard Brailsford and Glenn Hooton.
