OLYMPIANS Andy Triggs Hodge and Fran Houghton were the big winners at the 11th Oxfordshire Sports Awards.

The rowers took home the sportsman and sportswoman prizes respectively at the ceremony held at the Kassam Stadium.

Both played their part in Team GB’s successful Rio 2016 – Triggs Hodge bagging his third Olympic gold and Houghton, who competed in her fifth games, capturing a third silver medal.

Oxford City Athletic Club scooped both the club of the year award and coach of the year, with Marcia Marriot winning the latter honour.

Swimmer David Murphy was named junior sportsperson of the year, while Oxfordshire’s Under 17 cricketers scooped the junior sports team prize.

Oxford United took home the team of the year after winning promotion from Sky Bet League Two and reaching Wembley in an unforgettable 2016.

United continued to impress in January, when Emirates FA Cup victories over Rotherham United and Newcastle United saw them reach the fifth round for the first time since 1994.

But there was also sad news for the U’s as record goalscorer Graham Atkinson died at the age of 73.

Former Oxfordshire cricket captain Ian Hawtin was appointed chairman of selectors.

He was put in charge of a three-man panel alongside newly elected captain Jonny Cater (right), who replaced Luke Ryan, and head coach Rupert Evans.
