STEVE Townsend was a clear winner of the first round of the Angling Trust Oxford Winter League fished by six teams of eight on the Thames at Child Beale, near Reading.

The Drennan Oxford Aqua matchman caught around 20lb of roach on the pole for a winning total of 47lb 0oz 0drms on a clear river with little flow.

Clubmate Geoff Lewendon was second on 30.8.0, just pipping third-placed Ian Page Smith (Sensas Reading) on 29.9.0.

Despite having the top two weights, Drennan had to settle for second place in the team contest, being pipped by Sensas A4 in a tight competition.

Jason Bean secured his fourth victory in the last five North Oxford AS matches, when winning their Roach Cup on the Thames at Godstow.

Bean caught perch and roach for a winning weight of 7.11.8, just ahead of Dave Pether’s 7.8.0 of skimmers and perch.

Dave Scott-Picton was in third place with 6.10.8.
