DENNIS Butler is the only previous winner still standing after the Oxford Singles Cup reached the last eight.

The 2001 champion successfully came through three rounds alongside Gladiators A clubmate Kevin Baker.

Woodman have two representatives in Mark Rollins and Jeff Glenister, as do Swan A in the form of Mick Berry and Jon Townsend, while the line-up is completed by Rob Bradford (Black Prince) and Steve Walton (Donnington Club A).

Baker and Butler negotiated their way to the quarter-finals at Red Lion Old Marston.

The latter began with a blob against Bullnose Morris A’s Andrew Gorge, but took the next two legs with a four and a three to progress.

A 2-0 win against Ashley Keenan (Woodman) followed, before repeating the scorleine against the previously in-form Pip Goulding (New Club A), who blobbed in the first leg and lost the next on three sticks.

Baker reached the last-16 with a bye and a 2-1 success against Jason Fox (Six Bells Kidlington).

But it took a big effort to sink George A’s Kevin Stuart 2-1 in a high-quality clash which was decided on three sticks in the third leg.

The only six of the competition came from Bradford at the George, Littlemore.

After scraping past Graham Hambridge, of Bullnose Morris A, the maximum was perfectly timed to win the deciding leg against 2014 winner Dick Walsh (Swan A), who had set five.

Billy Trinder (Garsington Sports A) was then beaten 4-3, 3-2.

Glenister’s passage was also far from smooth.

After struggling past Blackbird’s Yorkie Finney, all three legs against Swan A’s Terry Stuart went to a three or one-stick shoot-out.

He then came from behind to beat Black Prince’s David Leopold in the third round.

Rollins sealed his quarter-final spot in style, hitting the target with his final stick to beat Adam Baker (Donnington Club A) 2-1, having got the better of Woodman clubmate Spencer Buckingham and James Morrison (George A).

The highlight for Walton, who beat Steve Ward (Six Bells Kidlington) in the first round, was a five-doll leg which beat Woodman’s Charlie Buckingham.

Barry Townsend (Gladiators A) was then sunk 4-3, 3-2.

Three-time winner Neil Lyon (Three Pigeons) was knocked out by Jon Townsend at the Three Horseshoes and he then came from behind to beat clubmate Lee Hazell in the last-16.

Berry completes the line-up for the quarter-finals, which will be held on Monday, September 4, after knocking out Willy Waite (Bullnose Morris A), teammate Daryll Simpson and Neil Pratley (Woodman).

There will be a new name on the Ted Houghton singles trophy after Josh Breakspear, of Donnington Club C, set up a meeting in the final with Littlemore British Legion’s Steve Jessop.
