CITY of Oxford’s Callum Smart and Connor Bryan have followed in the path of teammate David Murphy by being selected to represent Great Britain at two key events in 2017.

The call-ups for the 16-year-olds come off the back of their recent performances at the British Championships at Ponds Forge International Sports Centre in Sheffield.

Smart and Bryan finished second and fourth in the 200m breaststroke junior (U18) final and then first and seventh respectively in the 100m breaststroke final.

Their superb performances mean Smart will be heading off to Indianapolis for the World Junior Championships in August.

Bryan will be going to Israel for the European Junior Championships at the end of June.

Following the success of Smart and Bryan, City of Oxford swimmers were back in Sheffield for the British International Para Championships.

Chris Currie won bronze in the 200m freestyle final in a time of 2.16.14.

l SWIMMERS from eight local clubs battled it out in the last City of Oxford development meet of the season at Leys Pool.

Abingdon Vale, Banbury, Didcot Barramundi, Four Shires, Kidlington, Wantage, Witney and City of Oxford competed, with the strength of the last-named club proving the key.

In the opening girls’ event of 200m freestyle, Mai Thomas (14) came first.

There followed fast swims in the 100m breaststroke with Zofia Conway (8), Pearl Sophastienphong (9), Mila Burovska (10), Elliot Dandy-Minto (11) and Jessica Steel all winning their age groups.

In the gruelling 200m butterfly, Sophastienphong, Ellen Bagley (11), Willa Merttens (11) and Jasmine Johnson (13) all triumphed.

The final girls’ event, the 50m backstroke, saw 13 year-old Olivia Watkiss come out on top.

For the boys, Faaris Sharif (9) and Joseph Watkiss (11) claimed victories in the 200m IM.

Tristan Dennis (8) came out on top in the 100m backstroke, while Christopher Skelton won the 11-year-old category.

Kayden Sillah topped the 11 year-old age group for both 50m breaststroke and the final event of the day – 100m butterfly.
