COWLEY fighter Jordan Flynn has been offered a trial with the Great Britain Olympic team after impressing on the national stage.

The 20-year-old won bronze in the 56-60kg category at the Elite Championships in Sheffield.

Flynn was awarded boxer of the day when beating GB fighter and second seed Jack Brooker, of Northolt, on a split decision.

He was disappointed to lose the semi-final to Liverpool’s Callum Thompson by the same result, but his exploits caught the eye.

“Because of my performances the Team GB coaches were very impressed by me and I’ve been offered trials to make the Olympic team,” said Flynn, who trains at Hoddesdon ABC, Hertfordshire.

“This is massive for me and will take me to the next level as a fighter.

“My journey to Tokyo 2020 will be on the way if I make the team, which I’m confident of doing so having beaten the current team GB member.”

Flynn felt he had done enough to win his semi-final, landing cleaner punches, and admitted he was surprised to lose on a split decision – three judges against two – to Thompson.

He said: “Everyone in the arena, including him and his own coaches, couldn’t believe the decision.

“I was gutted to have it taken away from me like that.

“I didn’t even have to get out of first gear because I felt I was winning that easy. I was saving myself for the final the next day.

“But I and everyone else who saw the fight know who really won.”
