SAM Waley-Cohen says he still gets a buzz with every winner – no matter what the course – after steering Anquetta to victory at Lockinge yesterday, writes MARK EDWARDS.

The Gold Cup-winning jockey, who has enjoyed numerous successes on the biggest stages in National Hunt racing, returned to his roots for the Cazenove Capital and Old Berkshire Hunt meeting near Wantage.

Waley-Cohen drove his mount to a

one-length win in the Mixed Open, and then revealed the 13-year-old has probably run his last race.

“He has been a real star,” said the rider, whose father, Robert, owns and trains the horse at Edgehill, near Banbury.

“I have ridden him at the Cheltenham Festival, Aintree and a Hennessy meeting.

“That is probably his last race. He owes us nothing.”

He added: “It’s a great course here and is always a real family day.

“I have been lucky enough to ride winners at some very famous and high-profile tracks, but this is really fun and is why we are all involved in the sport.”

While the nice weather proved the perfect tonic for spectators, with around 7,000 flocking to the annual meeting, the amount of runners suffered, with just 25 taking their place in the six races.

However, it proved another good meeting for the Faringdon-based Henderson family, who completed a quickfire double.

Oliver James jumped the final fence last of the three runners in the opening Members’ race, but stayed on strongly under jockey Freddie Henderson to beat Gizzit.

And the rider was at it again half-an-hour later, when Otto The Great triumphed in the Conditions race for father James Henderson.

“I knew Oliver James stays three miles-plus, so knew he would get home,” the rider said.

“We will now probably aim Otto The Great at Cheltenham’s Hunter Chase meeting.”

“It has taken him a long time to get back to where he once was, but he felt great today.”

Katy Lyons, based at Lockinge, rode a winner at her local track when Spessartine proved the day’s easier winner in the final Maiden.

Butney Rock provided 16-year-old Monmouthshire jockey Milo Herbert with a first winner when landing the Members race for veteran and novice riders.

Very Intense enjoyed the quick going with a 12-length win in the Restricted race for jockey John Bailey and trainer Laura Thomas.
