OXFORD Hawks’ great run in the National Cup came to an end, with a 3-1 defeat at home to Brooklands in their quarter-final on Sunday.

The visitors, who play in the National Premier League, had to work hard for their victory in front of a large crowd.

Hawks weathered the early storm, before conceding two well-taken goals in quick succession midway through the first half.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with Brooklands exerting pressure, but Hawks continuing to pose a threat on the counter.

Brooklands made it 3-0 midway through the half.

But Hawks continued to press and were eventually rewarded thanks to a deft touch from Alex Williams.

A fine save by the visitors’ keeper denied Jack Biggs at a penalty corner and saved Brooklands from a nervous final five minutes.

Hawks’ South League Premier 1 game on Saturday at home to Havant had to be abandoned five minutes before half time when a deflected ball struck an umpire, who required hospital treatment.

Hawks were leading 1-0 at the time through Biggs’s penalty corner strike.

Oxford reached the last eight of the England HA Trophy on Sunday, with a 4-2 win away to Hampton-in-Arden on Sunday.

A brace of drag flicks from Niall Devaney put Oxford two up.

Hampton replied, before two goals from Dan Bleach and Arron Leadbeater as well as some fine saves from keeper Callum Chapman saw Oxford home, despite a late reply from the hosts.

The previous day, Oxford kept themselves in the promotion hunt in Regional Division 1 with a resounding 8-1 win over Newbury & Thatcham.

Skipper Matt McKeown scored a hat-trick, Devaney, Tim Burns, Bleach, Jonny Campbell and Sean Cox also found the net.

Dave Sutcliffe netted four goals as Bicester went second in Middlesex, Berks, Bucks & Oxon Division 1, with a 5-2 win away to South Berkshire 2nd.

Bicester’s other goal came from Will Hartley.

Leaders Witney won 5-2 at home to Sonning thanks to goals from Rory Heaslip (2), Ben Moss, Harry Smith and Justin Peel, four of the goals coming in the second half.

l OXFORD Hawks Ladies resumed their Investec Conference campaign with a 1-1 draw away to third-placed Olton & West Warwick

A short corner strike late in the first half put Olton ahead at the break, despite numerous good saves from Hawks keeper Miriam Pritchard.

Hawks dominated the second half and equalised with a great goal from Lucy Stewart.

Oxford went down 5-2 at Epsom in South Clubs League Division 2, despite an assured display from debutant Danielle Williams.

Kim Warman and Emily Malden netted for Oxford.

Witney drew 2-2 with Wycombe in Division 3A on Saturday, thanks to goals from Hayley Dobson and Sunny Ricketts.

Dobson was on target again a day later, with a penalty as they beat Eastcote 1-0 to go second.

The flick was awarded following a nasty stick-tackle on Ricketts.
