OXFORDSHIRE’S rowers helped Great Britain continue their domination of the sport at the Olympic Games in Rio.
Leander Club’s Alex Gregory and Oxford Blue Constantine Louloudis helped Great Britain’s men’s four to a fifth successive gold medal, taking victory by 1.83secs.
Andrew Triggs Hodge collected his third Olympic gold medal as part of the men’s eight, all of whom boasted Oxfordshire connections.
The 37-year-old, who lives in Checkendon, helped Great Britain claim their first Olympic gold in the event since 2000 and announced his retirement shortly after the Games.
Wheatley’s Frances Houghton picked up a third silver medal in the women’s eight, one of seven members of the team with Oxfordshire links.
Lawrence Clarke missed out on a place in the final of the 110m hurdles in his
final Olympic appearance, while Oxford’s Bryony Shaw finished ninth in the women’s RS:X windsurfing.
Oxfordshire’s cricketers lifted the Royal London ECB Under 17 Cup for the second time in three years with a win over Cornwall.
Meanwhile, the Kassam Stadium hosted Sky Bet League One football for the first time as Oxford United marked their return to the third tier with a 1-1 draw against Chesterfield in their season-opener.
