JAMES Walter showed why he has been called up to the Great Britain squad by playing a key role as Oxford Saints staged a superb comeback to win 26-15 at Bristol Apache.

The visitors trailed 13-0 at half-time, but stormed to victory with Walter scoring two of their four touchdowns.

It came after being switched from tight end to running back and he ended up with a personal record of 270 rushing yards.

Walter, who will be in the GB squad to face Russia in September, said: “I don’t see why both the team and myself cannot go on to set more records this season.”

Saints had won their opening match of the Southern Conference West Division 2 campaign, but extending the record looked unlikely as Bristol struck through Jon Walters and Dariusz Wiercioch.

But Walter began the fightback early in the third quarter and Saints led for the first time when Richard Bloomer added the two points to Grant Tebb’s touchdown.

Walter’s second score put Saints 20-13 up, but the result was not secured until Luke Fry charged into the end zone from 28 yards.

Luke Fielded attempted the extra point kick, but a deflection allowed a Bristol defender to claim the loose ball and run to the end zone for two points to complete the scoring.
