DAVID Murphy took a step closer to his goal of competing at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo after an impressive display at the British Championships in Glasgow.

The 17-year-old City of Oxford swimmer set a new south east regional record of 1min 2.76secs to finish third in the 100m breaststroke – the first under 18 year-old – and also came seventh in the 200m breaststroke.

Both were strong enough displays to qualify for the ‘Target Tokyo ‘final for athletes who show potential for the 2020 event.

Murphy’s times also put him in a strong position for selection for the European Junior Championship squad.

Clubmate Emily Wood, 17, also qualified for the ‘Target Tokyo’ final after taking sixth place in the 200m breaststroke, as well as claiming a place in the junior 100m backstroke final after finishing seventh.

Callum Smart and Conor Bryan, both 15, also had successful championships with both qualifying for the 100m and 200m junior breaststroke finals.

In a hotly-contested 100m final, Smart edged ahead of Bryan in the final few strokes to take third, though Bryan’s time of 1.05.12 was still a Welsh record for the event.

Smart finished third in the 200m junior final in a south east regional and Oxon and North Bucks junior county record time of 2.20.08,

Bryan secured eighth place in a Welsh age group record time of 2.24.41.

City of Oxford’s Fabian Whitbread (400m and 200m individual medley), Luke Thomas (400m individual medley) and Emily Nisbet (200m butterfly) also competed.
