OXFORD City Stars’ season ended in dramatic fashion as they suffered heartbreak in sudden death overtime against Streatham Redskins.

Veteran Nicky Chinn struck the winner to win a tense English National League South Division 1 play-off quarter-final 4-3 on aggregate.

Stars, backed by their biggest crowd of the season at Oxpens, had won the first leg 2-0, but Streatham made the most of home advantage 24 hours later to squeeze into the last four.

A cagey first game took time to get going, but Ondrej Pekarik broke the deadlock in the 12th minute after a pass from Shane Moore.

The Czech forward pounced early in the second period to double the lead.

Streatham’s best chance came ten minutes later, when Jake Florey was penalised for tripping when he denied a clear scoring chance.

But Stars netminder Tom Annetts held firm, keeping out all 27 shots.

It gave them a 2-0 lead to take to south London, where they were supported by a sizeable contingent from Oxford.

Alan Green came agonisingly close to extending the overall lead when he crashed a shot against the post.

The hosts stirred and Annetts had to make several important saves, but eventually the pressure told.

Joe Johnstone struck to halve the deficit before the end of the first period.

When play resumed it was peppered with penalties as both sides fought to gain the upper hand.

Annetts was again under pressure, holding out until 90 seconds from the end of the period, when Dave Savage levelled the scores.

It set up a nerve-racking finale where both sides had spells on top.

Streatham got the breakthrough, going ahead in the tie for the first time when Adam Wood struck with just under ten minutes remaining.

Stars looked out of it, but two minutes later they were celebrating when Pekarik turned provider to for Ben Ealey-Newman to make it 3-3 on aggregate.

It stayed that way at the buzzer, triggering an extra period, where the sides were reduced to five men on the ice.

Stars had Moore in the sin-bin for the first minute of the added time, which proved enough for Streatham.

Chinn, who has more than 1,500 senior games for club and country under his belt, fired high over Annetts to settle a memorable contest.
