DAVID Murphy celebrated success at the 49th Geneva International Challenge, collecting the accolades for the best individual performance by a male junior swimmer.

The City of Oxford member, representing the South East regional team, picked up gold on the opening day with a time of 2mins 19.97secs in the men’s junior 200m breaststroke, before finishing fourth in the men’s open 50m breaststroke.

Although no junior medals were awarded for 50m events, Murphy’s time of 28.95 saw him collect 750 Swiss francs and a watch for the best individual performance.

His City of Oxford teammate, Fabian Whitbread, was also in action, narrowly missing out on a medal after finishing fourth in the 400m individual medley.

Whitbread also finished eighth in the 200m butterfly.

Bicester’s Kieran Bird won three medals – gold in the 200m butterfly, as well as bronze in the 100m butterfly and 200m freestyle.

Bird contributed to a 26-medal haul from the team, which also included his clubmate, Thomas Thornley.

ABINGDON Vale youngsters wiped the floor in Witney’s Development Gala.

The Vale squad, aged 12 years and under, rattled up 243 points to win by 39 from City of Oxford.

Vale were quickest out of the blocks with three wins and two second places in the first five relay races.

They finished the gala by winning the 6x50m freestyle relay event.

Bicester Blue Fins finished sixth and amongst their strongest performers was nine-year-old Olivia Jordan, who was second in the girls 50m freestyle.

In the ten-year-old equivalent, Isis Ashley-Sparks took third.

The boys nine-year-old relay team of Carson Walbert, Frankie Oliver, Freddie Kemp and William Wright claimed third in the 4x25m freestyle relay.

In the 50m butterfly, Charlotte Kemp (age 11) and Isla Bohannon (nine) finished third in their respective age groups.

Nate Bishop emulated that achievement in the boys under 11 event.

In the same age group, Josh Lorimer (50m breaststroke) and Tommy Wright (50m backstroke) also took third.

Jordan, Frankie Oliver, Bohannon and Carson Walbert were in the top three in the mixed 8/9-year-old 25m breaststroke relay.

And in the mixed 11-year-old equivalent, Charlotte McKinley, Josh Best, Hannah Roe and Bishop also earned a third place position in the 25x4 butterfly relay.
