BRADLEY Smith has unfinished business at the British Grand Prix ahead of this weekend’s MotoGP race at Silverstone.

The 24-year-old, from Forest Hill, near Oxford, heads to the Northamptonshire circuit after signing a new one-year contract with Monster Yamaha Tech3 earlier this week.

Smith is enjoying his best year in the premier class, finding himself fifth in the standings and top satellite rider – behind only those on better-funded factory bikes – after 11 races.

However, last year’s British GP is still in the back of his mind, after a cracked rear wheel saw him finish a lap behind in last place.

Smith said: “I do feel there is unfinished business and I owe the fans a good, solid result.

“I was unlucky last year.

“I certainly enjoy the track a lot, I will be giving my best.”

Smith’s best result this year is fifth place at Mugello and Catalunya, and he has finished as the top satellite rider on seven occasions.

However, he remains coy about his chances of a first podium since Phillip Island last year and believes the weather may have to play a part on Sunday.

Smith said: “I think it is certainly difficult (to finish on the podium), but let’s not say it is out of the question.

“With the weather as well, anything is possible.

“A bit of rain can spice up the action, that levels the playing field.”

The Oxfordshire man heads into the weekend as the top-ranked British rider, and wants to strengthen that advantage.

He is 32 points ahead of Cal Crutchlow, and is confident he will thrive under the expectation from the home crowd.

The last time he experienced such limelight was in 2009 at Donington Park when he was fighting for the 125cc World Championship.

He said: “I expect quite a lot of attention, but I enjoy that and perform well under pressure.

“It will be nice to turn up and have it a bit like it was in the past.

“The crowd really do get behind us and, although there are more British riders in the championship now, I am the leading one.”
