HEADINGTON A were too strong for their C side to lift the Hawker Cup with a 45-22 success at Oxford City & County.

Stars of the show were Bernie May, Ian KibbleWhite, Paul Mabbutt and Ian Snowdon, whose 28-6 win ensured there was no way back for their clubmates.

It looked as though it would be a hard-fought affair when the sides were level at 5-5 after eight ends.

But the A team then raced clear of the C four, which comprised David Taylor, John Nicholls, Nathan Lewis and Jason King.

Snowdon’s side promptly collected 14 unanswered shots, and although the rot was stopped when Headington’s C side picked up a point, a further nine shots over three ends brought the match to a close.

Dean May, Alan Manger, Gary May and Howard Watts – the A team’s other rink – had a much closer encounter in their game against Jon Philpott, Norman Rae, Colin Whitehead and Nick Rae-Welsh.

They edged home 17-16 to secure an emphatic overall success.

The morning semi-final between Headington A and Witney Mills saw Watts’ four win 28-13 against Roy Bull, Arthur Howard, Pete Wilson and John Mott, while Ian Snowdon’s rink recorded a 23-9 success against Mike Miles, Nick Andrew, Charlie Fisher and Chris Weller.

Headington C reached the final by beating Watlington 45-27.

The Nick Rae-Welsh four led the way with a 23-8 win against Vic Webb, Les Westcott, Gordon Hooker and Bob Gilkes.

Watlington’s other rink of Sam Watts, Adie Twinn, Chris Gilkes and Shane Cooper saw their early dominance overcome by King’s four, who went on to win 22-19.

The third place play-off produced a closer contest than the final, with Watlington beating Witney 43-33.

Both Watlington rinks produced a five-shot win, Gilkes winning 21-16 against Mott and Cooper triumphing 22- 17 over Weller.
