TOM Thornley won three medals as Bicester Blue Fins enjoyed a record-breaking British Summer National Championships.

The club had six qualifiers, four more than last year, and the 15-year-old led the way at Ponds Forge, Sheffield.

Thornley took silver in the 200m backstroke (2mins 6.65secs) along with bronzes in the 100m (58.30) and 50m (27.45).

Tabitha Watkins was the club’s other competitor, finishing 11th in her age 13/14 50m breaststroke heat, but her time (35.27) was a new best, club record and fastest from the south east region.

Two more medals came in the open water events at Rother Valley Country Park.

Kieran Bird knocked two minutes off his 3km best (37.06.50) to finish third.

He was also 18th in the 100m butterfly and swam in the GB mixed and boys 4x100m medley relay teams.

Bicester’s medal haul was completed by Lottie Wynne-Jones, who finished third in the age 12 1,500m (20.23.38).
