HENLEY’S Leander Club features heavily in the selection of Great Britain’s team for the European Championships to be held in Poland at the end of this month, writes JOHN WIGGINS.

The team, for the event in Poznan from May 29-31, relies heavily on Oxfordshire oarsmen and women.

Leander rowers occupy six of the nine seats in the men’s eight.

Britian’s head coach, Jurgen Grobler has picked those available from last year’s gold medal coxless four, together with Oxford Blue and Olympic gold medallist Peter Reed and, for his inaugural appearance in a senior boat, former St Edward’s School pupil Stewart Innes.

Another Oxford Blue, Paul Bennett, retains his seat in the eight, as do Leander rowers Matt Gotrel, Will Satch and cox, Phelan Hill.

Leander’s Charles Cousins and Peter Lambert are selected in an unchanged quad scull, as are Jonny Walton and John Collins in the double and Matt Langridge in the coxless pair.

From last year’s eight, Tom Ransley moves into a new combination coxless four with silver medallists from the coxed pair, Alan Sinclair and Oxford Brookes’ Scott Durant.

Brookes’ rowers past and present feature in the men’s lightweight team.

Newcomer Joel Cassells is in the coxless four, Peter Chambers in the double with Leander’s Jonno Clegg and brother Richard in the double scull.

The open-weight women’s team contains many familiar names and several Leander members.

They include Louise Reeve and Headington’s, Katie Greves in the eight rowing with another Brookes representative, Olivia Carnegie-Brown and coxed by Oxford Blue, Zoe de Toledo.

Katherine Grainger goes back into the double scull with Leander’s Vicky Thornley, while veteran Frances Houghton, from Wheatley, takes on the single.

Neither Andrew Triggs Hodge (out with illness) nor Oxford Blue, Constantin Louloudis (preparing for his final examinations) feature in this squad.

But there are only plans for Louloudis to return later in the season.
