FORMER City of Oxford swimmer Alex Murphy has earned a place in the Ireland team for this summer’s World Championships in Russia.

Murphy, who swam with Oxford for a year before switching to University College Dublin, won the call-up after winning gold in the 50m breaststroke at the Irish Championships.

He also claimed gold in the 100m breaststroke with a time of 1min 2.41secs, putting him in contention for a spot in next year’s Rio Olympics squad.

BUDDING City of Oxford swimmers, aged eight to 14, took part in a gala at Leys Pool & Leisure Centre.

Nine-year-old Oliver Conway smashed his personal bests in setting the fastest times in his age group in the 100m breaststroke, 50m butterfly, 100m individual medley and 100m freestyle.

Zane Khan, also nine, was quickest in the 200m breaststroke and 200m backstroke.

In the older age groups, 12-year-old Billy Wootton edged Ed Sharp, 13, in the 100m backstroke.

George Rudd, 12, swam the fastest times in the 200m breaststroke, 100m individual medley and 50m breaststroke.

Eleven-year-old Megan Smit beat her personal best by 30 seconds in winning the 200m butterfly from Erin Gilchrist, 12.
