Danny Dunton, who rode for Oxford Rebels and was also a co-promoter, has died, aged 90.

Dunton started riding with Harringay Racers in 1949, having taken his bike along to a meeting.

He was also a contracted or loaned rider with Belle Vue Aces, Ipswich Witches, Rebels and Long Eaton Archers.

In just his second season he qualified as an England international for the world championship final and finished 12th.

Dunton retired from racing at Long Eaton at the end of 1963, having scored 127½ points from just 17 matches.

In 1965, he bought the Oxford promotion, later to be joined by Bob Dugard.

Following the decision of the British League promoters in November 1967 to run a second division, Dunton formed Allied Presentations Limited with fellow promoters Maury Littlechild, Len Silver, Ron Wilson and Reg Fearman.

Their company opened three tracks in 1968, Reading, Middlesbrough and Rayleigh, and constructed Crewe in 1969, followed by Peterborough in 1970.

Each franchise was promoted by one of the APL members and Dunton’s track was Peterborough.

He then went on to promote Oxford Rebels and finally White City Rebels.

After retiring from riding, he served during the 1970s on the committees of the British League and then the National League as its chairman in 1981-85 and 1987.

He was honoured by being made president in 1988.

He was active in the World Speedway Riders’ Association, and was elected president for 2005-6.
