Oxfordshire's Katherine Hawes is aiming for more glory this year after a highly-successful 2014.

The Oxford & District indoor star was called up recently for England’s team for the British Isles Women’s International Series at Stanley IBC, Durham, from March 6-8.

She said: “I’m over the moon to be selected again, which is obviously nice. It’s something to look forward to.”

Hawes has fond memories of last year’s competition when she was thrilled to be named player of the series after helping England retain the Clara Johns Trophy.

“Last year just topped it all off,” she said. “I never expected to receive it. It was just the icing on the cake.

“I am always happy to play well and the main thing is to win the trophy for England.”

That triumph provided the springboard for a memorable year for Kidlington-based Hawes, who went on to help England’s outdoor team retain the British Isles Women’s International Series title in Jersey.

She also skipped the Oxford City & County four of Myra Lewis, Donna Knight and Gail Gilkes to glory in the National Fours Championship at Royal Leamington Spa.

They will now represent England in the British Isles Women’s International Series back at Victoria Park in June, when Hawes and Banbury Central’s Carole Galletly will also play for England in the team event.

Hawes added: “Having won the fours we go for the British Isles and that’s one of the targets.

“Coming back to indoors it’s just the early stages of the nationals and you always hope that you can qualify and do really well in those every year.

“The first target is to win a national, but they don’t come along very often.”
