GARY Barclay led Drennan Oxford to victory in the second round of the Oxford Winter League, fished by six teams of eight anglers on the Medley, Channel and Folly sections of the Thames.

Barclay, on the favoured Folly Bridge section, had perch, skimmers and roach on an 11m pole, fishing maggot over groundbait for a winning weight of 18lb 9oz.

Richard Cox, from Tubertini Apollo Black, was second with 16.9, which included three bream, from the Marlborough Road reach on Folly.

He just beat Drennan Oxford angler Richard Head, who was third with 16.8.

With three anglers in the top five – Martin Phipps was fifth with 14.6 – Drennan took the team prize with 50 points. Sensa A4 were second on 46, and Tubertini third on 41.

Brian Hutchings made it back-to-back victories when he won Littlemore Angling Society’s SH Taylor Cup on the Thames at Sandford.

Hutchings, who also picked up the Golden Peg, fished the bomb with lobworm for an hour, but could not find a big perch or chub.

He then opted for his trusted waggler with maggot and caught some quality roach for a winning weight of 13.9, which gave him 25 points in the Top Tackle Points Shield.

Pete Clarke had a bream and a big perch on the pole with lobworm and then switched to the waggler with maggot, which brought him some roach in his second-placed catch of 12.1. Alan Campbell was a distant third with 5.2.

Clarke and Malcolm Smith will meet in tomorrow’s Knockout Cup final.

Terry Whittington made the most of a favoured peg to win North Oxford Angling Society’s Pixie Shield on the Thames at Godstow.

Whittington, who was on a peg that had been second twice and won once in the previous three matches, had a good bag of perch on chopped worm to record a winning weight of 12.0.0.

Also with a bag of perch, but using maggot, Steve Wildman finished second with 6.7.8, just ahead of Dave Pether, who had a mixed bag of roach and perch on maggot and weighed in 6.3.0.

THE Pike Anglers Club hold their first ever junior coaching day at Horseshoe Lake, Lechlade today from 10am-5pm.
