ICE HOCKEY: Mixed fortunes for Stars

Oxford City Stars had a mixed weekend, with a win and a narrow defeat in their first two games of their English National League South 1 campaign.

On Saturday, they thrashed Swindon Wildcats 7-2 away, but the next day lost 5-3 at Bracknell Hornets.

Stars, who were without Richard Wojciak, dominated from the off, but could not convert it into goals.

Late in the first period, Andy Cox broke the deadlock, firing past ex-Stars player Jamie Thompson in the Wildcats’ goal.

Six minutes into the second period, Josh Oliver made it 2-0.

Stars went a man down when Alan Green was sin-binned for hooking call, with Swindon reducing the deficit.

Andrew Shurmer and Wa-yne Fiddes made it 4-1 to Stars, before Swindon scored again on the power play.

The visitors kept up the pressure in the third period with Cox scoring a second before a Gareth Endicott double sealed victory.

Against Hornets, Stars were lifted by the return of Wojciak, though Joe Edwards missedout after being injured against Swindon.

Stars took the lead a minute from the end of the first period when captain Darren Elliott found a way past David Wride in the Bracknell net.

However, Stars were rocked when Bracknell levelled when the puck deflected off a perimeter board to Alan Lack who finished well.

Grant Rounding then gave Bracknell the lead, but Oxford were level when Elliott got his second.

Radek Simecek and Danny House made it 4-2 to Hornets, before Cox reduced the deficit.

Bracknell’s Danny Hughes made it 5-3, despite an offside claim to end Stars’ misery.

On Saturday, Oxford City Stars host Cardiff Devils (5) and on Sunday Wightlink Raiders are the visitors (6.15).
