TODD Kane believes the quality in Oxford United’s squad means he is only looking up heading into the final third of the season.

The full back joined on loan from Chelsea in a deadline day last month and has been impressed by the standard.

While a run of four defeats in five games has seen United slip into the bottom half of the Sky Bet League One table, Kane is certain they will not get dragged into a relegation dogfight.

The 24-year-old, who scored on his debut in the 3-2 win at Charlton, said: “I just think with the quality of players here I don’t think we should have the worry of thinking ‘hold on a minute, we’re going to go down here’. Not at all.

“When I first came here I thought to myself ‘we should be pushing higher’.

“It’s just a little bit of luck sometimes. I’m very confident.

“If people disagree that’s their opinion, I’m only saying from my experience here.

“There’s 14 games left and with the quality here I genuinely believe there’s nothing to worry about.

“The performance at Charlton was good and knowing that we can beat a team like that, we can beat anyone in the league.

“I don’t think pushing for the play-offs is over yet.”

The next challenge is a home game against a Plymouth Argyle side bang in form.

By contrast, United have lost five of their last eight games at home, most recently the 2-1 defeat to Bristol Rovers last weekend.

For Kane, it was a reminder they need to stick to their beliefs.

He said: “We got the early goal and it was a good feeling.

“I thought we could control the game, but we got sucked into Bristol Rovers’ philosophy. We were playing a style that didn’t suit us whatsoever.

“I don’t know why, in the game things happen but we got sucked into their game plan.

“We’ve just got to think positive.”
