HEADINGTON A proved invincible in a record-breaking season in the Bridle Insurance Oxford & District League.

The Division 1 champions whitewashed Carterton 6-0 in their final match to win the league by the widest ever margin – 17½ points – having secured a remarkable 65½ points out of a possible 72.

Only Watlington and Banbury Central were able to take more than a single point from Headington in any match.

That victory for the champions, inspired by skip Nick Rae-Welsh’s 30-shot success, means that Carterton are relegated from the top flight along with South Oxford A.

Kidlington took the Division 2 title, but only on points difference from the strong-finishing Witney Mills, who trounced bottom club Adderbury in their final contest.

Richard Barnett’s rink completed the whitewash with a three-shot win.

While the victory clinched promotion for them, Mills would have needed another 42 shots to deny Kidlington the title.

Charlbury were already the Division 3 champions, but they still had a major role to play in deciding who were promoted with them.

Hanborough or Headington B were the two promotion candidates.

The latter travelled to the champions for their final fixture and lost 6-0, leaving Hanborough in second spot.

Blackbird Leys and Chadlington fought out a draw to ensure the former’s survival and the latter’s relegation.

The other undefeated team in the league are the Division 4 champions Thame.

Neither South Oxford or Bloxham could overtake City & County B, who had already finished their programme, and now go up along with Thame.
