CHIPPING Norton’s Andy Carpenter extended his lead at the top of the ACU National Endurance Championship with a hard-fought second place at Silverstone.

Carpenter, along with Team Go Racing Developments Endurance teammate Sebastian Kelly, is now in pole position for the title with three rounds to go.

The duo qualified third for the three-hour race, but rivals motorcycleraceparts.com took an early lead through former British Superbike rider Tom Tunstall.

However, their charge was short-lived as Tunstall’s teammate Rick Dickinson crashed at the end of the Hangar Straight after his throttle stuck open.

Carpenter took the lead in his final stint, handing over to Kelly with a 20-second advantage to Team Bush.

However, the hard-charging Christie O’Connor closed the gap and took victory.

Carpenter said: “We knew this one was not going to be easy from the combined lap times of all the riders from the qualifying session.

“Having won the last four events we were more than satisfied with this result to strengthen our campaign.”
