CITY of Oxford’s David Murphy has made waves on the international stage by breaking a British record and bringing home two medals.

The 17-year-old won bronze in both the 100m breaststroke and 4x100m mixed medley relay on his debut at the European Junior Championships in Hungary.

He also set a British Age Group record on the third day of the event, posting 28.38secs in the 50m breaststroke to finish fifth overall.

Murphy had already clocked a personal best and English Age Group record in the heats with a time of 28.51.

A fast semi-final saw the City star book his place in the final where he saved his best until last.

He finished just 0.52 shy of a podium and his time took him past Rio-bound Olympian Craig Benson’s British Age Group record of 28.39.

After his success in the 50m event he went on to post a personal best in the heats of the 100m breaststroke, with a time of 1.02.35, and again in the semi-final when he finished in 1.01.78.

Almost immediately, he jumped back in the pool for the final of the 4x100m mixed medley relay, helping Great Britain win bronze alongside Elliot Clogg, Emily Large, and Freya Anderson.

Murphy still had to compete in the 100m breaststroke showdown and he was just shy of his personal best as he secured a second bronze medal in 1.02.03.
