Merthyr Tn 3

(McLaggan 41, 57, Traylor 83)

Didcot Tn 1

(Brooks 85)

Didcot Town produced an improved display, but title favorites Merthyr Town were too strong in Saturday’s Southern League Division 1 South & West clash.

The hosts were the better side in the first half, having a goal disallowed for offside and also seeing Kayne McLaggon go close.

With half-time looming, however, they did make the breakthrough when McLaggon gave the hosts the lead.

The same player wasted a number of opportunities early in the second period, but soon doubled his tally when he outjumped Adam Learoyd to head past James Foster.

Didcot started to come into the game after the goal, but a brilliant double stop from Merthyr keeper Tom Bradley denied leading scorer John Mills and substitute Ryan Brooks, who was returning from a hamstring injury.

Merthyr ensured the three points late on when Ian Traylor fired home seven minutes from time.

Didcot kept pushing forward and were rewarded when Brooks scored on his league debut, but it was no more than a consolation.

Didcot Tn: Foster, Bernasconi (Brooks HT), Heapy, McKirnan (Baines 74), Carnell, Learoyd, Dutton-Black, Clark (Abrahart 84), Mills, Self, Whitehead. Sub not used: Williams.

Attendance: 405.
