Grove Challengers 0-4 Ardington Eagles in U12 Cup

11:08pm Thursday 13th October 2011

Ardington Eagles gave a fine performance to defeat Grove Challengers 4-0 in the first round of the U12 cup. Eagles dominated the early stages with numerous attacks down both wings putting pressure on the Grove goal. After 10 minutes the pressure paid off when a shot from Joe Horton deflected off a defender and looped over the Grove keeper, who had no chance. Eagles continued to attack in numbers with crisp passing and good wing play and soon the score was 2-0 after Sam Hinder pounced on a defensive slip to slot the ball into the net. Towards the end of the first half, Grove fought back and started to create chances but the Eagles defence of Luke Hayes, Charlie Clack, Callum McGeachie and the indomitable Jack Cheshire were expertly marshalled by goalkeeper Andrew Francis and kept Grove at bay until half time. The start of the second half was very even with both teams going all out in attack and there was a feeling that the next goal could swing the game either way. Once again, the Eagles defence, helped by a hardworking midfield trio, kept the lively Grove attackers frustrated with strong defensive work and good organisation. This allowed Eagles to set up their own counter attacks and Sam Hinder gathered the ball wide right, raced towards Grove goal and, from the edge of the box, hit an unstoppable shot high into the net to make it 3-0. This effectively ended the contest and although Grove kept fighting to the end, Eagles finished the game off when Tom King fired in a free kick that bounced deceptively in front of the goalkeeper and ended up in the net. Final score 4-0.

Drayton Wasps 0 Milton United 2

4:09pm Sunday 9th October 2011

Drayton Wasps more than matched their higher league opponents, Milton United, in the first round of the Under 12's Cup, but were made to pay for two lapses in concentration, and more than a couple of missed chances. Milton, with the wind at their backs, started the stronger, but despite having the lions share of possession, were unable to break down a resolute Drayton defence. After 20 minutes, the entire Drayton defence appeared to nod off, as a free kick from the left was allowed to reach Jordan Mordey on the edge of the 6 yard box, who gratefully tucked to ball away to make it 1-0 to Milton. Drayton came back strongly, and just before half time Josh Dennis rode several strong changes before putting the ball in the net, only to see the goal disallowed for an apparent foul by Dennis (much to both teams bemusement). It remained 1-0 to Milton until half time. The second half was again, a very even affair, with very few clear cut chances. Will Simmons had the chance to equalise when clean through, but skewed his shot wide. With ten minutes remaining, Drayton wasted their best chance. After the Milton Keeper, Josh Godfrey, had made a fantastic save, Kyle De Silva smashed the rebound against the post. The ball fell to Josh Dennis six yards out, but he failed to convert this golden opportunity. With Drayton pushing forward looking for an equaliser, Milton were catching the home side on the break, and from one particular breakaway the entire Drayton defence were sucked towards the man with the ball, leaving the unmarked Jordan Mordey the simpliest of tap in's from the resultant cross. A very entertaining game, played in a fantastic spirit. Good luck in the next round Milton. Back to the league for The Wasps.
