Oxford City Stars’ fans have expressed their dismay after the team pulled out of the English National League South Division 1 on New Year’s Day.

It followed a mass exodus of players after the sacking of player-coach Ken Forshee.

He was axed following a wretched sequence of 12 league games without a win and replaced by coach Simon Anderson.

“It is very disappointing news,” said Ian Dibley, the chairman of Oxford City Stars Supporters Club.

“A lot of people have put a lot of effort in this season, off the ice, to try and give that extra support to the team.

“I believe Oxford Stars ENL1 hockey will return, there are too many people that care for that not too happen.”

Katherine Smith, who first attended the Stars as a toddler said: “I feel completely devastated.

“I’ve been supporting the Stars for 22 years and this loss makes me feel as though a huge part of my life has been taken away. I’m simply heartbroken”.

Promising under 16 player Michael Raff added: “I play for the Stars juniors, and would have had an opportunity to try and get a place in the team in the coming few years.

“But now this won’t be possible, and eventually I’ll have to find another club.”

Terry Winter, who has followed the team since the rink opened in 1984 said: “Over the years Oxford have produced a good youth system which has seen many youngsters progress into senior hockey.

“I think its a real shame that individuals have come to the decision to take away ENL1 ice hockey from the city of Oxford.”
