HOCKEY: Cresswell sets it up for Hawks

Oxford Mail: Oxford Hawks’ Dave Cresswell sees his shot hit a post and go to safety Oxford Hawks’ Dave Cresswell sees his shot hit a post and go to safety

Dave Cresswell maintained his top striking form with a brace as Oxford Hawks moved up to third spot in Premier Divison 1 with a 3-1 victory at home to London Wayfarers.

Hawks took an early lead when Cresswell, who scored five times against West Hampstead last week, converted a short corner. With keeper Dave Jones keeping Wayfarers at bay with some fine saves, Hawks went further ahead with a far post deflection by Cresswell from Ric Corbett’s backhand cross.

In the second half, a momentary lapse in defence allowed Wayfarers to pull back a goal.

But Hawks, who had dictated much of the play, sealed the result ten minutes from time when, after a good move, Corbett was upended by the Wayfarer's keeper.

Charlie Ellison despatched the penalty flick to complete a comfortable victory.

Oxford maintained their unbeaten record in Regional Division 1with a 1-1 draw at Old Merchant Taylors.

Kit Cutter scored Oxford’s goal.

Oxford Hawks 2nd triumphed 1-0 at Wallingford, with Joe Brownhill netting.

Oxford 2nd conceded three second-half goals as they lost 4-2 at home to Newbury &nd Thatcham in Regional Division 2.

Rich Harding’s equaliser for Oxford made it 1-1 at half-time.

Newbury sped 4-1 ahead after the break before Ben White pulled back a goal at the death.

Witney got their season back on track with a 5-2 home win against Eastcote 2nd. The hosts took an early lead through Ben Wells but let Eastcote to equalise in a rare attack before half-time.

Witney regained the lead through a skilful volley from Justin Peel before an error allowed Eastcote an equaliser. From then on, Witney's fitness showed. Man-of-the-match Tim Hardy netted twice from short corners and Jacob Deacon sealed the points with a great finish.
