HOCKEY: Students get a scare from Oxford

Oxford gave Oxford University a fright before going down 3-2 at home in their Women's South Clubs League Division 2 local derby.

A disputed strike from a short corner put the students ahead.

Despite some committed defending by Clare Shaw, they added a second before half-time.

A third goal appeared to put the result beyond doubt, but Oxford found some confidence and won a series of short corners.

A Rachael Lammey strike reduced the arrears and a brilliant move between Becky Hibbert and Lyn Cockshott soon produced a second.

However, despite applying some pressure, Oxford could not find the equaliser.

Witney returned to winning ways after three defeats in a row as they won 1-0 away to Oxford 2nd in South Clubs League Division 3A.

Katie Gatt bagged the only goal with a great individual strike early in the first half.

Bicester remain two points clear at the top of Trysports Premier 2, despite a 4-3 defeat at Reading 2A.

The visitors found themselves 2-0 down early on before Kath Crook replied with a magnificent solo effort, but Reading netted again to go in 3-1 up at the break.

Captain Lilla Venning and a second from Crook made it all square, but the home side wrapped it up with a fourth goal ten minutes from time to inflict Bicester’s first league reverse in 18 months.

Kidlington tasted defeat for the first time this season and also conceded their first goals as they lost 2-1 at Abingdon in Division 9.

* Helen Baddeley hit a hat-trick as Oxford came from behind to beat Sutton Coldfield 4-2 in the England Under 18 Girls Cup second round. Bubble Baddeley scored the other goal.
