HOCKEY: Away stars Banbury struggling at home

3:58pm Monday 14th December 2009

In the last game before the Christmas break, the top two in Division 3A of the South Clubs’ Women’s League met with Banbury playing host to Wycombe – and it was the visitors who triumphed 2-1.

Wycombe appeared quicker off the mark, and within minutes Banbury found themselves a goal down when the league’s top scorer, Jane Clarke tapped home from close range for her 13th goal of the season.

However, apart from this five-minute lapse, Banbury had the majority of the possession and played some fine hockey.

Luck did not go their way when the umpire blew the whistle moments before a goal was scored. However, Banbury continued to maintain possession and Ann Glover scored early in the second half.

Wycombe responded well and scored off a counter attack, leaving Banbury disappointed not have to got at least a point from the game.

Banbury end the first half of the campaign in second place, with City of Oxford – without a game at the weekend – third.

Banbury need to improve their home form if they are to win promotion. They have won all their away games, but have lost three times at home.

West Witney beat Staines 2nd 4-0 with goals from Anna Kirk (2), Sadie Laper and Lucy Reading, to moves up to 5th in Division 3A.

Witney played a great passing game and defended strongly to keep a clean sheet, while also converting their chances.

Kelly Fogden and Sandra Satterly were on target as Oxford Hawks 2nd notched their second victory of the season, 2-1 against Sonning.
