Oxford Hawks finished the season with a bang as they saw off South League Premier Division 1 champions Chichester 3-2 at Banbury Road North. It was only the Sussex club’s fourth defeat in 22 outings and Hawks’ victory ensured a mid-table place.

The opening exchanges bel-onged to Chichester as Hawks sat back, and only some smart saves by Phil Hargraves kept them at bay for a time.

However, Hawks paid the price when they failed to cope with an aerial ball which led to the visitors taking the advantage at the break.

The second half saw a more determined Hawks giving their opponents less time, but they couldn’t stop Chichester making it 2-0 via a short corner .

Hawks pulled one back with a fine individual goal from Steve Kelly, and then Mark Crowley levelled from close in. Chichester hit back hard, but Hawks held firm and with a few minutes left, Charlie Ellison scored the winner from a short corner. Hawks will have to do without Brookes students Ellison, Kelly and Matt Richardson next season as they are leaving the club after three years.

Hawks 2nd are relegated from Premier 2 after managing only two wins in 22 matches.

They lost their final game 3-2 to London Edwardians, Jack Biggs scoring both their goals.

Champions Hawks 3rd were unbeaten all season, dropping just one point in Regional 2 and signing off by thumping South Bucks 9-0.

The goals came from Jamie Clark (2), Neil Gallagher (2), Bas Marshall (2), Adrian Murdock, Dave Springer and Tobjorn Turland.

Oxford must wait another week to discover if they have made it into the play-offs in Regional 1 of the Middlesex, Berks, Bucks & Oxon League.

They lie second in the table, but third-placed Henley, who led the division for much of the season, have a game in hand at home to Eastcote this Saturday.

Oxford finished their campaign by beating PHC Chiswick 3-2 thanks to goals from Dan Bleach, Matt McKeown and Dan Pilbeam.

Witney drew 0-0 with fellow relegation team Aylesbury and move down into Regional Division 2.
