TITLE hopefuls Chichester proved too good for Oxford Hawks as they ran out 3-1 home winners in Saturday’s South League Premier Division 1 encounter.
Hawks have not managed to bring back points from the south coast club for a number of seasons and this match proved no exception.
The visitors began well, Charlie Ellison consistently finding the wide midfielders, while birthday boy Matt Wood’s pace caused problems.
It was Wood who opened the scoring after one of his runs was rewarded with a goal from close range.
Chichester levelled from a messy short corner and upped the tempo in the second half to put Hawks on the back foot.
A deflection just inside the far post saw the Sussex side take the lead and although Hawks won a number of short corners, Chichester added a third from a well-worked short corner to seal the points.
Oxford University edged a thriller 5-4 away to Staines.
Rupert Allison and Oliver Sugg each bagged a double, with Duncan Graves also on the mark.
Oxford Hawks 2nd remain rooted to the foot of Premier Division 2 after going down 3-2 at home to London Edwardians, Simon Buckingham bagging both goals.
Regional 1 basement boys Witney gave themselves hope for the second half of the season with a 3-0 win over Aylesbury.
They remain bottom, but only on goal difference from Staines 2nd.
Goals from Jacob Deacon, Ryan Fitz-John and Andrew Willemite were enough to see off Aylesbury.
Oxford drew 1-1 away to Chiswick thanks to a goal from Matt McKeown.
Andy Wynd helped himself to four goals as Oxford 2nd beat Sonning 5-1 in Regional 2. Rupert Da Silva was also on the mark.
