Oxford Hawks surrendered a 2-0 lead and conceded a goal after the final whistle as they lost 4-3 to Oxford University at Iffley Road on Saturday.

The victory took the students one place above their local rivals in Premier Division 1 of the South League.

Hawks’ goalkeeper Phil Hargraves kept his side in the game with a string of saves in the first 20 minutes, but it was the visitors who went ahead via an own goal off the home keeper’s pads.

A fine solo effort from Rich Barlow made it 2-0 at the interval. The Dark Blues were level within 15 minutes of the restart from two short corners and then went 3-2 up with a simple tap-in. Hawks levelled through Matt Wood and a draw looked certain as the final whistle sounded just as the students won a short corner. Play continued and after a frantic scramble, the students scored via a flick off the inside of a post to snatch the thrilling victory.

Oxford Hawks 2nd drew 2-2 with Woking in Premier 2, their scores coming from Dan Andrews and an own goal.

Oxford maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a 1-0 win away to Wallingford in Regional 1.

The opening exchanges belonged to Oxford, forcing Wallingford back, but creating few clear chances. Wallingford dominated the remainder of the half but also struggled to find the target.

Oxford upped the tempo after the interval, taking the lead when Chris Way and Dan Strange set up Callum McKenzie for a tap-in.

The home side pushed for a late equaliser, but were denied by keeper Chris Mitty, who made one excellent one-on-one save.

Witney remain rooted to the foot of the table after going down 6-0 away to PHC Chiswick.

Bicester allowed a 6-1 lead to be reduced to 6-5 away to OMT 2nd in MBB&O Division 1 but held on for victory.

* Witney 3rd’s MBBO Open Division 5 fixture away to Amersham & Chalfont was abandoned with the visitors 5-0 down.

Three Witney players failed to arrive due to car problems and when the nine were reduced to seven due to injuries to Will Briggs and Richard Demczek, the match was halted.
