EDDIE Pepperell insists he has a lot more to offer after impressing on the biggest stage at the US Open.

The Abingdon golfer finished in the top 20 at Erin Hills, Wisconsin, to produce comfortably his best performance in a Major.

Pepperell beat many of the sport’s biggest names including Sergio Garcia, whom he partnered on the final day, and former World No 1 Jordan Spieth.

The 26-year-old’s performance is a continuation of an upturn in form over the last month, which saw him qualify for the US Open at Walton Heath and finish in the top ten for the first time since July 2016 at the Nordea Masters in Sweden.

Pepperell, who moved up 89 places to 71st in the Race To Dubai rankings after pocketing more than $140,000 at Erin Hills, puts his improvement down to a change of equipment and new-found confidence with his driver.

The Frilford Heath member, who regained his European Tour card at qualifying school in November, is confident he will only get better.

“I still think there is a lot more to come,” said Pepperell.

“The last few weeks have been better, but I expected this year to be my best after last year.

“Sometimes you need a little trough before you figure things out and come out the other side – that’s the nature of life in any shape or form.”

Pepperell has made the cut in each of his last four tournaments, including the US Open, having failed to do so in 13 of his previous 15 events since August last year.

The World No 337 added: “Last year, I made a couple of bad decisions and struggled a bit, but I knew I would figure things out.

“I’m happy with what I’m working on and I think the last few weeks have been good.

“They could have been better if I had putted better, but I’m pushing on and feel like I can demand more of myself.”

Some of Pepperell’s family and friends flew out to America to watch him play.

He dug deep on Thursday and Friday to shoot one-over-par and make the cut.

Pepperell then impressed over the weekend, finishing on a five-under overall total of 283 for a share of 16th.

He said: “Friday was the most stress relieving day because I did not get off to the greatest of starts and did well to hang in there.

“It was a nervy day for me and for everyone there watching me, I could sense that.

“It was a case of getting through Friday morning and being in a decent position to maybe go for it at the weekend.“I did not play well enough to contend, but it was a good showing nonetheless.”

He added: “It was cool to have my family and a couple of friends there.

“They’ve come to every major I’ve played – it’s great to have that support and without it it would have felt different.”

EDDIE Pepperell is confident of continuing his good form when he returns to the European Tour today.

The 26-year-old tees off at the BMW International Open in Munich, Germany, at 7.50am (BST).

Pepperell is in an upbeat mood after his efforts at the US Open and is backing himself to deliver once again.

He said: “I know the course, but I need to focus from the beginning.

“My game is in good shape and I should not expect to see too many erratic shots, so it’s about building scores and I will certainly have confidence off the back of last week.

“I’ve still got to produce the form and the game to do that, but I expect good things to continue to happen.”
