EDDIE Pepperell cannot wait to sample the noisy atmosphere at Erin Hills as he attempts to improve his major record in the United States.

The 26-year-old, from Abingdon, came through qualifying last month to secure a coveted place at the US Open.

Pepperell has an idea of what to expect in Wisconsin, having played in the tournament in 2013 and at the US PGA Championship two years ago.

And the Frilford Heath member is relishing the prospect of savouring the buzz once more.

He said: “The whole experience is amazing, because there’s lots of noise and the crowds are great.

“You know you are at event, which is cool.

“No matter where you are, there’s noise. I heard someone describe it as a hum.

“At an Open (in Britain) the crowds are great, but maybe because it’s by the seaside the noise gets drowned out.

“If you are somewhere near the top or you’re in a group with a big name come the weekend it will be great.

“I would love to be a part of that.”

Pepperell crosses the Atlantic in his best form for almost a year, having made three successive cuts on the European Tour.

But the US Open is renowned for being the toughest test in golf and first-time hosts Erin Hills will be no exception.

The par-72 course measures 7,800 yards, but it is on the greens which Pepperell knows he must find form, having comfortably missed the cut in his previous US majors.

He said: “It’s the US Open, so no matter what it looks like you know what you’re in for – ridiculously thick rough and very fast greens.

“The big thing is the putting. In the two majors I have played in the US I have putted horrifically.

“Even in my amateur days I found the greens very tough in the US.

“I will have to spend a lot of time working on that when I get there.”

“But I feel like I’m playing well at the moment.

“I will go out there and have fun.

“I’ve got low expectations and if something happens then great.

“I believe I can do that and if so, then that’s a springboard.”
