EDDIE Pepperell is all set to be in the field for a second Major in five weeks, with an invitation to play in the US PGA Championship expected to arrive shortly.

It is the reward for the Abingdon golfer’s excellent season and comes hot on the heels of his Open Championship debut last weekend.

Qualification for Whistling Straits, Wisconsin, is not guaranteed.

But with last year’s tournament including players ranked just outside the top 100, Pepperell, ranked 85th in the world, is confident of being in the field.

And after a run of four events in a row, culminating in a joint 49th-place finish at St Andrews on Monday, the Frilford Heath player is planning for the event to be his next competitive outing.

He said: “The top 100 get in so we are pretty positive we will be there.

“A part of me thinks I should get back on the European Tour and play a couple of times first, but a much bigger part of me is saying ‘go and play in the major next’.

“I don’t need to earn any points in Europe – I’m pretty safe for the season-ending events, so it’s an opportunity to go out and play a tough course in America.

“The previous week at the Scottish Open (where he finished joint fourth) was a big one and I can look forward to some really nice events at the end of the year.

“It’s an opportunity for me but I want to improve as well.

“I feel I have a lot of confidence built up and want to finish the year well by winning an event.”

If the US PGA invite does come through it will mean Pepperell, who successfully qualified for the US Open at Merion in 2013, will have played in every major apart from the US Masters, all by the age of 24.

Although a final round 76 at St Andrews saw the Oxfordshire golfer slip down the standings on Monday, he returned from Scotland with a far higher profile.

A hot streak in the third round of the weather-affected tournament thrust him into a share of the lead – and he loved being in the spotlight from media and supporters.

He said: “There was certainly a lot more attention, but I see it as a good thing.

“It was a long week and I had a lot of messages.

“People have said they enjoyed watching me play, which is nice."
