EDDIE Pepperell coped with a ten-hour delay due to high winds at St Andrews to safely make the cut on his Open Championship debut.

Heavy rain on Friday meant the Abingdon golfer only played nine holes of his second round.

Resuming on one-under-par for the championship at 7am on Saturday, only one hole was completed - a birdie at the tenth - before strong winds suspended play again.

Conditions did not improve until 6pm and Pepperell negotiated the remainder of his round.

Another birdie followed at the 13th, but the Frilford Heath golfer dropped a shot at the par five 14th, before pars at the final four holes.

A round of 70 put him on two-under in a share of 38th place, eight shots behind leader Dustin Johnson.

While Pepperell made the cut, a host of big names missed out, including Tiger Woods, Ian Poulter and Bubba Watson.

The weather disruptions mean The Open is a day behind schedule and will finish on a Monday for only the second time.
