KIRTLINGTON prodigy Gregor McKenzie is waiting to hear whether he has qualified for the Callaway World Junior Championships in San Diego for the second successive year, after a near-miss in a tournament last week.

The 12-year-old, who won the nett prize at the club championship earlier this year, lost a play-off to Ryan Chadwick in the British Junior Golf Tour tournament at Collingtree Park.

Both scored 81 in the event – a qualifier for the world championships – which was reduced from two rounds to one because of the bad weather.

“We’re still waiting to hear whether he has qualified for San Diego,” said his father Ewan, from the family home in Garsington.

“Gregor qualified last year, but couldn’t go because it clashed with a family holiday.

“We’ve made sure there is no clash when the event is held next July.”

Seven-handicapper McKenzie, who first picked up a club at the age of three, attends Magdalen College School, Oxford, and has represented their senior golf team, despite his young age.

Also at Kirtlington, Ben Crumell scored his first hole in one at the par three fourth in a men’s medal competition.

* TADMARTON Heath’s hopes of ending the Shaw Gibbs Oxfordshire Foursomes League season on a high were dashed when they lost 2½-½ to Chiltern Forest in the Knockout Cup final at Chipping Norton.

The final ultimately was decided by a turnaround in the top match, in which Chiltern’s David Cobley and Tom Higgins retained their unbeaten run in both league and cup by coming back from two down after five holes to beat Ian Manning and Les Robinson 3 & 2.

Chiltern’s Paul Mardon and Mark Williams won 4&3 to put the tie beyond Tadmarton, leaving Eliot Lloyd and Neil Trew-Smith to halve their match with Spencer Hallam and James Burton.

KO CUP FINAL Chiltern Forest 2½, Tadmarton Heath ½ (Chiltern Forest first): T Higgins & D Cobley bt I Manning & L Robinson 3 & 2; E Lloyd & N Trew-Smith halved with S Hallam & J Burton; M Williams & P Mardon bt O King & L Washbourne 4 & 3.
