EVIE Gane was delighted to score the equaliser on her debut as Oxford United earned their first point of the season in a 1-1 draw at Brighton & Hove Albion.

Bronwen Thomas opened the scoring for the home side in the Women’s Super League Spring Series clash, before Gane fired home in the second half.

The 16-year-old superbly lobbed goalkeeper Emma Byrne and was thrilled to make such an impression on her first appearance.

Gane said: “I saw the space, cut inside and I went for it, it landed top corner and it was great.

“For me it was a big step up from reserves to the actual WSL – I have got a lot to improve on strength and the speed of play, there’s a lot to work on.”

Oxford dominated the first half at Culver Road and had the ball in the back of the net, only for Ini Umotong to be penalised for a foul in the box.

But Brighton took the lead against the run of play on 31 minutes when Thomas’s deflected shot looped over United goalkeeper Demi Lambourne.

Oxford drew level on 66 minutes, though, thanks to Grane’s delightful lob.

And they could have won it late on, but Umotong’s effort hit the woodwork.
