INI Umotong says she is excited to get back into action for Oxford United Women after penning a new deal with the club, writes MATTHEW BRUCE.

The U’s travel to Premier League North side Coventry United in the third round of the SSE Women’s FA Cup tomorrow (2pm) ahead of next week’s FA Women’s Super League 2 Spring Series opener.

And after signing on for the coming campaign, which runs until May, the 22-year-old revealed there is a buzz around the camp.

“We’re really excited,” Umotong said.

“All the girls are buzzing to get going again.

“We’re desperate to get out there and we’re ready to give 100 per cent in this game, and I think that gives us an edge.

“I think it would be a big morale boost if we can get started with a win to take into our league campaign and a cup run would be great.”

Umotong was named WSL 2 player of the season last year, after scoring 13 times in 19 games for a side who finished just one place off the bottom of the table.

While it is unlikely she will reach that impressive goal tally in this abridged season, the Nigeria international is hoping for another successful season in front of goal.

“My target is to finish top goalscorer again,” she said.

“I have a figure in mind, but I’m not going to jinx it by saying what it is.

“As a team we’re aiming to do better than last year and I see no reason why we can’t do that.

“We’ve got a great set-up here and we’ve kept the majority of the squad together from last year.

“We had a difficult season last year, but we have learnt from our mistakes. It was a learning experience.

“We’re a very young squad and we’ve got a lot more experience behind us now, so I think we can really push on well.”
