INI Umotong’s third goal for Oxford United was little consolation after their 5-1 drubbing by Durham in FA Women’s Super League 2 at Abingdon United.

The 21-year-old striker has netted in each of Oxford’s three league games this season, but said her goals mean nothing if they don’t result in points on the board.

She said: “I’d much rather score no goals and win the game than score ten goals and lose a game any day.

“It’s very disappointing and it just takes away from the excitement of scoring.”

By the time Umotong struck in the tenth minute, the U’s were already two goals down.

In the second minute, goalkeeper Demi Lambourne spilled a corner to allow Sarah McFadden to tap in the opener.

And Durham doubled their lead five minutes later when Nicki Gears outpaced United’s Rosie Lane before rolling the ball past a helpless Lambourne.

Umotong seized on a poor clearance from Durham keeper Helen Alderson to put the U’s back in the game, striking low into the bottom corner.

But right on the stroke of half-time, the visitors restored their two-goal cushion when Gears crossed for Natalie Gutteridge to head home.

Gears was again instrumental in Durham’s fourth in the 65th minute, squaring for Beth Hepple to tap in.

And Hepple completed the scoring six minutes from time with a deft lob over the Oxford keeper.

The U’s will be hoping to break their duck at Yeovil tomorrow night.
