City of Oxford College’s Kay- lem Patterson found himself at the centre of controversy as England Under 18s lost 1-0 to Republic of Ireland, whose victory at Sligo Rovers saw them capture the Inspiresport Centenary Shield.
Patterson, who came on as a substitute for the last 20 minutes, was through on goal when he was felled by the out-rushing Irish goalkeeper, who was surprisingly only shown a yellow card.
And Ireland’s narrow victory saw the Emerald Isle pip England for the title.
Patterson, 17, from Headington, was making his fourth substitute appearance for the Three Lions after featuring in wins against Wales and Scotland and a 2-2 draw with Northern Ireland.
