OFA SAM WATERS CUP
HOLDERS AFC Hinksey recovered from a nightmare start to secure a 6-4 victory in an incident-packed third-round tie away to Banbury & District Sunday League side Wroxton Heath, writes Tim Siret.
Both sides finished with ten men – and with different goalkeepers – while Hinksey’s Kieron Davis scored a second-half hat-trick in the ten-goal spectacular.
Hinksey, who arrived late after losing their way, found themselves 2-0 down to goals from Chris Young and Rick Johnson. They battled back to equalise through Julian McCalmon and Adam Doyle, before Toby Hones gave Wroxton a 3-2 interval lead.
Karl Adams, the Hinksey keeper, departed at half-time with an ankle injury, but they soon made it 3-3 with a penalty from Davis.
Wroxton regained the lead when Johnson beat stand-in keeper Toby Webster from the penalty spot, but Davis then scored twice to complete his hat-trick and put Hinksey in front for the first time.
After Wroxton keeper Jack Harding was sent off, James McCuaig put the visitors 6-4 in front.
In the closing minutes Hinksey’s Steve Haines was shown the red card, but they hung on and now face a last-eight tie against Critchleys UTV League rivals Oxford Yellows.
Yellows beat Kings Arms Wheatley 2-0, thanks to a bullet header from Andy McMahon and a neat finish from Mark Scanes.
Rover Cowley, last year’s beaten semi-finalists, recorded a remarkable 6-1 extra-time win over UTV Division 1 high-flyers AFC Jericho.
Rover took the lead after two minutes via a Carly Bloomfield header, but Jericho equalised through a penalty from Kamen Matthews.
In extra-time, Rover banged in five goals, Bloomfield scoring a further three. Ben Armstrong and Craig Hambridge’s penalty completed the tally.
Kidlington Royals progressed with a 5-0 home win against a brave King & Queen Wheatley.
John Mills, back from injury, grabbed a brace, with Keiran Sanders, Tom Franklin and Ben Willoughby also scoring.
Dorchester United won 5-1 at Chinnor Athletic.
Liam Morris and John Boal’s spot-kick gave Dorchester a two-goal lead at the break, Colin Royall added a double in the second, with midfielder Michael Hinkin finishing off a fine team performance.
Their reward is a home tie against fancied Kidlington.
UTV Division 3A outfit Iffley Harriers lost 6-2 to last year’s beaten finalists Highfield Social Club, despite goals from Patrick Montgomery and Andy Campbell.
