Abingdon Town have been removed from the North Berks Cup for fielding an ineligible player in their semi-final win over Saxton Rovers.

Niall Hodgkinson, who has featured for Thame United, has played too high a level to qualify for the competition, according to North Berks disciplinary secretary Steve Bolton.

The final will now be contested by Berinsfield and Saxton at Abingdon United, on May 9 (7pm).

Pete Fathers, a Saxton committee member, said: “It is a shame, no one wants to go through on default but rules are rules.”

Saxton secured their Division 1 safety with a 3-1 win over Crowmarsh Gifford, condemning the visitors to relegation.

Steve Gair scored, but Gary Belcher (2) and Steve Pitson ensured Saxton’s status.

Lambourn Sports will replace Crowmarsh after they inflicted an 11-1 mauling on Westminster in Division 2.

Ben Matthews hit a double hat-trick with Mark Mooney (2), Tom Eatwell, Terry Wood and Steve Rackham netting.

Harry Ackland’s goal was a small consolation.

East Hendred kept their title prospects alive, thrashing Faringdon Town Res 8-0.

Teenager Tom Geach grabbed a hat-trick, with Ben Hummel scoring twice and Mike Farrelly, Ben Sutton and Jason McDowell also amongst the goals.

Stanford in the Vale completed their season with a 3-1 win over Burghclere.

Brad Gill, Jamie Gregory and Adam Grey scored.

Tom Smallridge replied.

Stanford’s promotion hopes now rest on the results of East Hendred.

Relegated Saxton Rovers Res went down 9-0 at Coleshill United.

Matty Howe claimed three goals, with others coming from James Head, James Tranter, Luke Coxhead, Dan Kingsley, Andy Lynham and Shane Blake.

Hanney United secured runners-up spot in Division 3 as Harwell Village lost 3-2 to Benson Lions.

Jake Chaffey struck twice but Jon Radcliffe (2) and Chris Swales gave Lions victory.

In Division 4, Uffington United beat Steventon Res 3-1, courtesy of Ian Moore’s brace and Daniel Scrivens.
