FOOTBALL: Didcot take derby spoils
10:00am Monday 27th August 2012 in Non League
Lance Williams scored the winner as Didcot Town came from behind to beat neighbours Abingdon United at a rain-drenched npower Loop Meadow Stadium on Saturday.
But the hosts did it the hard way after Matty Biddle fired the visitors into a shock lead, with Morgan Wiliams levelling before namesake Lance spared Didcot’s blushes.
The Railwaymen started the stronger, coping better with the tricky conditions caused by torrential rain.
Pablo Haysham brought a decent stop from James Foster in the Abingdon goal, before Leon Bird had a great opportunity for the visitors, but volleyed over.
Moments later Abingdon did take the lead. Toby Nowell broke down the left and his cross was sidefooted home by Biddle from close range.
But their celebrations had barely finished when Didcot levelled.
A speculative shot from Morgan Williams should have been easily gathered by Foster, but he lost control of the greasy ball and was horrified to see it bobble over the line and into the net.
Brian Bowles tested Foster with a stinging drive before James Clark grazed a post.
Didcot keeper Marco Belloli did well to palm away a powerful shot from Nowell at the start of the second half.
The home side started to take control and there was little surprise when Didcot bagged the winner.
Morgan Williams’s cross was headed in by Lance Williams.
Foster then pulled off an excellent save to prevent Morgan Williams adding a third.
Angell had the ball in the net in stoppage time, only to be ruled out for offside and it is Didcot that travel to Windsor in the first-qualifying round on September 8.
